What is Clubhouse?

Clubhouse is an audio-based social networking app. It came about in March 2020, with Paul Davison and Rohan Seth being its creators. The app offers virtual rooms where you can participate or only listen to conversations on a particular topic. The users can also create their own rooms and start a conversation.

According to the company itself, Clubhouse is “a new type of social product based on voice [that] allows people everywhere to talk, tell stories, develop ideas, deepen friendships, and meet interesting new people around the world.”

Is it Audio Only?!

Yes! Unlike many other social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, Instagram, and many more. The distinguishing feature of Clubhouse is its audio-only, camera-free environment. The company describes it as a “very special medium” on its official site.

They wrote, “You don’t have to worry about eye contact, what you’re wearing or where you are.” The only important thing is your voice because “the intonation, inflection, and emotion conveyed through voice allow you to pick up on nuance and form uniquely human connections with others. You can still challenge each other and have tough conversations — but with voice, there is often an ability to build more empathy. This is what drew us to the medium.”

Who Can Join It?

For now, the app is still in its beta version. That means you need an invite from an existing user to join it. The company is giving every Clubhouse user two invites, which they can then pass on to someone.

At the moment, Clubhouse is only available to iPhone users. And, the company is reportedly selling invites for money to its users.

If you don’t get an invite, you can still download the app and register your names on a waiting list.

The company says that the app is still in its nascent stages, and they are working hard to get it available for mass usage. They want to add people gradually so that nothing breaks.

Celebrities Making Appearances on Clubhouse

One of the many ways that Clubhouse has been able to grab the attention is by bringing renowned celebrities to try it. Among them, Oprah is the most famous for having tried the app. Others include movie stars like Kevin Hart, Jared Leto, and Chris Rock. The silicon valley giants Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have also spent time on the app sharing their thoughts.

Controversy Around The App

Despite the hype Clubhouse has created, many women say they have experienced harassment and bullying in the app’s meeting rooms. They have also reported that the discussions have wandered into anti-blackness, anti-semitism, other forms of abuse, racism, and hate speech.

These issues present challenges for Clubhouse. The company says they are working to make people’s experience on the app better. They assure that they are building a team of advisors and making the system of reporting such incidents more real-time, robust, and specific.

Clubhouse also looks forward to training more moderators and equipping them with better tools, so they can keep discussions in check. They will also enable the creators of different chat rooms to form a certain set of rules that the participants must adhere to before joining the conversation.
