Michelle Obama Celebrates 57th Birthday While Reflecting on ‘Difficult’ Year
Michelle Obama received a slew of well-wishes on her birthday this Sunday. She has entered the 57th year of her life.
Obama took to her Instagram and shared a no make-up selfie, thanking her fans and friends for the birthday messages.
“Thank you all for the lovely birthday wishes!” Obama wrote. “I know this past year has been difficult for us all on so many levels, so I just hope you all are taking care of yourselves and finding joy in the smallest moments. Love you all. 💕”
The former first lady is very outspoken about the coronavirus pandemic and political turmoil in the US. She referred to the past year’s difficulties in her post regarding novel coronavirus, racial justice, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Barack Obama also celebrated his wife’s 57th birthday with a sweet message on Instagram and Twitter. He shared a throwback photo of the former first lady on his respective social media handles.
“Happy birthday to my love, my partner, and my best friend. Every moment with you is a blessing. Love you, Miche,” he wrote.
The Obamas have spent their last year at home with their two daughters. The lockdown in place has brought them closer amid the pandemic. Obama also opened up about her low-grade depression. Quarantine and the country’s political climate have taken a toll on her mental health, said Obama.
The sadness, said Obama, is “not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife” amid protests sparked by George Floyd’s death and that “just seeing [President Donald Trump‘s] administration, watching the hypocrisy of it day-in and day-out, is dispiriting.”
