Henry Darby serves as a city councilman and principal at North Charleston High School. This didn’t stop him from taking up a third job at Walmart. He works three nights a week from 10 P.M. to 7 A.M, stocking shelves at the local store. He uses this extra money to help his students pay bills, buy food or pay tuition.

What Henry Darby Has to Say?

“I know that my students will not always be in poverty. I know that because that’s what we are,” Henry Darby chimes in.

The Principal’s efforts are applaudable because 90 percent of Darby’s school families live below the poverty line.

“I was born and reared here, and I saw the need, and I tell folks that people my age, that we basically do not ask for funds if we were to find a way to procure the dollars ourselves, that’s what we would do,” Darby told “America Reports.” “So when I saw the needs of my students and their parents, I decided not to ask anyone for any dollars, just to accept another job.”

‘I get a little emotional, because when you’ve got children you’ve heard, sleeping under a bridge, or a former student and her child, they’re sleeping in a car, or when you go to a parent’s house because there’s problems and you knock on the door, there are no curtains and you see a mattress on the floor,’ he added.

‘And these people need – and I wasn’t gonna say no. And at my age, you know, we don’t ask for money. We just don’t. You just go ahead and do what you need to do.’

Darby’s hard work has attracted a lot of attention at the local and national level, as Walmart gave him a $50,000 check in recognition of his efforts. Furthermore, various GoFundMe pages have started to help Darby and his community.
