The modern gay rights movement began in New York fifty years ago. The Stonewall Inn was one of the only places in the city where members of the LGBTQ+ community could express themselves. The police’s attempted raid on the establishment led to a multi-day riot. 1970 was the year of the inaugural gay pride parade. In Simone Castricum’s native Australia, gay and lesbian rights groups weren’t established till the 1960s. Melbourne was the birthplace of Australia’s first gay rights organization. However, Simona’s incident suggests that the city needs to become more aware. Education on the history of the LGBTQ+ community can go a long way in making sure trans women like Castricum don’t go through similar ordeals.
