Following Simona Castricum’s mistreatment at the nightclub, people were calling for the bar to be canceled. Castricum, on the other hand, suggested another course of action. She called for education and awareness instead of simply canceling the bar. Canceling cancel culture is a conversation that has begun as of late. The culture is becoming toxic and doesn’t allow for growth, education, and awareness. A high-functioning democracy consists of people hashing out their political disagreements. Although deciding to cancel or not cancel depends on the issue at hand. With that being said, more thought can go into whether or not the cancellation is the right course of action. In the case of the security guard that refused to let Castricum use the women’s bathroom, the victim herself felt the need to educate the man. The guard also apologized when he learned better.
Simona got overwhelming support from social media users when the story went viral. The DJ received comments from people saying that she shouldn’t have to be so humiliated for using the bathroom. The netizens had her back and were shocked that an incident like this occurred at an LGBT-friendly location. Trans people often find it challenging to find a safe space as it is. When you find a place where you can be yourself, it can be traumatic when discrimination reaches you. The people commenting in support of the musician understood how difficult it must’ve been for her. They called for the bar to educate its employees, especially since it prides itself on being a very inclusive establishment.
