What happened at the US Capitol Riots?

The violent supporters of Donald Trump carried out the storming of the US Capitol. Trump called thousands of his supporters to Washington, D.C. He claims that the 2020 election had been ‘stolen’ from him. The rioters violently attacked the US Congress at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. This resulted in the evacuation and lockdown of the Capitol building. Furthermore, there were five deaths in the event. It was a failed attempt to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential elections. The mob breached all the security perimeters and occupied the building. They stormed, vandalized, and looted the building for several hours.

Why is Jacob Chansley asking for Trump’s Pardon?

Recently, Trump made headlines for granting a full pardon to 15 people. Those also included four former Blackwater guards. The court convicted them in 2007 for a massacre in Baghdad that resulted in the death of more than a dozen Iraqi civilians, including two children. All four private security guards were serving lengthy prison sentences, but Trump pardoned the convicted war criminals.

This time Jacob Chansley, the main man in the Capitol riots, wants Trump to pardon him. He claims that he was ‘answering the call of our president’. The horned hat man also asserts that he wasn’t violent and peacefully walked into the building.

Albert Watkins, the Capitol rioter’s lawyer, is defending his client. The federal grand jury is indicting him on six charges.

‘Trump needs to stand up and own these people. He owes them – he has an obligation to them,’ Watkins said to host Chris Cuomo.

‘And do what?’ Cuomo asked.

‘Give a pardon, give a pardon,’ Watkins replied.

‘You want him to pardon the people that broke into the Capitol and killed a policeman and was trying to get to members of Congress?’ Cuomo hit back.

‘My role is not to judge somebody. My role is to be an advocate. If there’s one iota of a chance that the guy who is the president of our country who invited everybody down Pennsylvania Avenue will give my client a pardon, you know what, I’m going to do it,’ Watkins explained.

‘Now am I holding my breath thinking Donald Trump will be sitting around going, you know what, what’s the name of the guy with the horns? Let’s give him a pardon. With Trump, you never know. He may say I want the guy with the horns,’ he added.
