The actress opened up about her immense grief over losing her ex-husband while talking with therapist Angie Johnsey. During her Instagram live she said; “You never like this new normal but that’s what it is.” “It’s about finding a way to survive this new normal… which many people are doing. This whole year unfortunately has been about death and grieving and loss… Too many people have lost too many things. It’s just shattering what’s going on,” she added.

Eddie Van Halen, the renowned songwriter, and guitarist, died due to cancer at 65.

Valerie and Eddie’s Life Together

The pair had been married for 26 years, and they had one son, Wolfgang, who is 29 now. While reminiscing about her relationship with him, she said it was ‘messy,’ but we also had some beautiful times.

Bertinelli said, “That’s the thing about grief is it’s actually a bit of a blessing because — and I’ll just take my relationship with Ed for the last 40 years — it was a messy relationship.”

The Food Network host, 60, also said, “We had some very difficult, very challenging times, but we had some beautiful times too.”

“The lovely thing about grief and the gift that it gives you is that it’s so much easier to remember the beautiful moments than the challenging and the difficult moments that we had with that person,” Valerie continued. “Those are beautiful things to hold onto and remember the best of whoever you’re grieving.”

Talking About Grief Helps Valerie Bertinelli

For the actress, talking about her loss has helped her. Bertinelli said, “Talking about grief is the appropriate thing to do. We’re all going through some form of it.”

“We do need the dark to see the bright light, to see how light it can be. Without the dark, we would never see the light — it’s just there, and you become numb to it. So the darkness makes us appreciate the light more,” she added.

Valerie Bertinelli hopes that he will live on through his son Wolfie, much like they both are carrying on Van Halen’s memory. Last month, Wolfgang and Valerie celebrated what would’ve been Halen’s 66th birthday. The actress wrote on Instagram, “I will see you in our next life my love.”
